Google Maps Just Got an AI Makeover with Gemini

Google Maps just became a lot more conversational. Thanks to Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, the app is getting its biggest upgrade in years, transforming how users search, navigate, and explore the world around them.

Starting this month, four new Gemini-powered features are rolling out to Maps on Android and iOS in the US, making it easier (and smarter) to get where you’re going.

Talk to Google Maps

You can now chat with Google Maps. While driving or walking, users can simply ask Gemini questions like:

“Find a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, and what’s parking like there?”

Gemini will respond conversationally, suggesting relevant stops, adding calendar events, or even discussing local spots you’re considering. You can also report incidents hands-free, all without taking your eyes off the road.

More Descriptive Directions

No more confusing “turn left in 600 feet.” Gemini now provides directions that reference real-world landmarks, like “Turn left after the Shell station.”

By analyzing Street View images and Google’s massive database of places, Maps can now help you navigate using visual cues that actually make sense.

Proactive Traffic Alerts

Google Maps will now warn you before you hit trouble. With proactive notifications about upcoming closures, traffic jams, or road disruptions, you’ll have time to adjust your route, or your mood, before the slowdown hits.

Lens with Gemini

Once you arrive, you can use the camera to explore with AI. Tap the Lens icon in the Maps search bar, point your camera around, and Gemini will identify shops, landmarks, and restaurants, even giving you quick summaries like a restaurant’s vibe or what it’s known for.
