Following the deal it recently struck with Universal Music Group, Facebook has also reached an agreement with Sony ATV Music Publishing to allow musicians to earn royalties when their music is shared on the social network.
The deal, just like the one with UMG last month adds over three million songs to the list of tracks that users on Facebook can use on their posts, without fearing the repercussions of copyright infringement. It allows the copyright owners (the musicians) to earn money from royalties related to the use of their music on Facebook, and it means that you can now freely share any songs from Sony/ATV’s back catalog.
Again, the multi-year agreement will spans multiple territories and extends to Facebook, Instagram, and Oculus. As Tamara Hrivnak, Facebook’s head of music business development explains: “We’re excited to work with the largest music publisher in the world to bring amazing songs which deepen connections between friends and fans,”and that “Sony/ATV is a true leader and an absolute champion of writers in the digital space, and we’re thrilled to work with them as they grab new opportunities by the horns across all of our platforms.”
I am pretty sure that users are also thrilled, as they can now include three million songs in their posts – from artists like Pink, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West. The list also includes legendary artists like The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Carole King, and Queen.
How exactly the artists will earn royalties from Facebook is unknown, but I am sure the method will be made known soon. The agreement is the second one in a month to take place between Facebook and a recording studio, and I am sure it won’t be the last. Facebook’s tenacity of meeting with record execs during the last year is finally paying off for the company.
