Facebook has announced Bulletin, a new publishing and newsletter subscriptions platform open to a small group of US creators.
Facebook is moving into newsletter subscriptions with a new service called Bulletin, allowing writers to publish their writing and have people subscribe to free or paid newsletters.

As explained by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Bulletin is “focused on empowering independent writers, helping them reach new audiences and power their businesses.”
Bulletin is only open to a hand-picked list of creators in the US at the moment, but Facebook says it won’t take a fee from writers at launch. Furthermore, those who create content on Bulletin have full control over their writing and subscribers. If they leave, they simply take their writing and their subscribers with them.
With Bulletin, creators will get their own standalone website (with their own brand) outside Facebook, where they can customize their publication’s name, logo, colors, etc. They can also customize their articles with embeds and other “styling options.”
Facebook Pay will handle payments, and subscribers can use a credit card, debit card, or PayPal account to sign up. The platform also offers a range of subscription services – content, the ability to comment, and exclusive Facebook Groups that can be accessed only by subscribers.
Bulletin content will be distributed in Facebook News and “other discovery surfaces,” – and the platform will also include “tools to distribute podcasts in addition to long-form writing, including externally-hosted podcasts and additional audio features coming soon.”
Furthermore, Bulletin will also integrate with Facebook Pages, allowing creators to publish across different formats. Writers will be able to use a range of existing tools like Facebook Live or Live Audio Rooms to build their community – and comment moderation tools to keep conversations respectful.
Bulletin is Facebook’s answer to the newsletter craze led by Substack and, more recently, Twitter’s own newsletter subscription platform based on Revue, a platform it acquired earlier this year.
Among others, the first to use Bulletin are Malcolm Gladwell, Tan France, and Erin Andrews. You can take a look at the full list here.
