Instagram finally dropped Edits, its new standalone video editing app and its answer to TikTok’s go-to editor, CapCut.
Now available for free on iOS and Android, Edits is a standalone video editing tool built specifically for creators. It brings a more robust set of features than what you’ll find in the main Instagram app: think green screen, subject cutouts, AI animations from static images, and tools for tracking ideas, managing projects, and monitoring performance.
Edits is described as a “video creation app designed for creators.”
If that sounds familiar, it’s because it mirrors much of what CapCut already offers. Meta first teased Edits back in January, right around the time both TikTok and CapCut were briefly pulled from US app stores—fueling speculation that Meta sees CapCut as a direct competitor.

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri addressed the comparisons early on, noting that while Edits may look similar on the surface, it’s designed with a different user in mind: serious creators, not casual editors. He hinted the app will lean into a wider range of creative tools, but likely appeal to a more niche audience.
More features are already on the way, including keyframe support, deeper AI tools, and collaborative editing.
