ChatGPT Is Testing a ‘Study Together’ Mode

Could It Reinvent AI for Education?

Some ChatGPT subscribers have spotted a mysterious new tool in their dropdown menu: Study Together. The experimental feature seems to mark a shift in how OpenAI’s chatbot positions itself as an educational companion  not just a source of instant answers.

Early reports suggest Study Together flips the script by encouraging users to think for themselves. Instead of simply delivering responses, ChatGPT asks more questions back, prompting users to actively engage with the material, much like a tutor would. It’s giving strong LearnLM vibes, Google’s AI project focused on interactive learning.

Speculation is already swirling about what Study Together might become. Could it evolve into a collaborative mode where multiple users join the same chat, turning ChatGPT into a virtual study group? OpenAI hasn’t confirmed any details yet. In fact, when asked, the chatbot itself responded coyly: “OpenAI hasn’t officially announced when or if Study Together will be available to all users or if it will require ChatGPT Plus.”

One thing is clear: AI is already deeply embedded in education for better and worse. Teachers use ChatGPT for lesson plans, students use it as a tutor… or to write entire essays for them. Some educators fear that tools like this could undermine learning altogether. But Study Together hints at a different future, one where AI actually fosters critical thinking instead of shortcutting it.

Stay tuned to see if Study Together becomes a core feature — or just an intriguing experiment.
