It took a while, but it’s finally here. Bluesky is rolling out draft, one of the most requested (and most basic) features for a social platform.
Until now, users had to either post immediately or abandon half-written thoughts entirely. Not ideal for a network that positions itself as a calmer, more thoughtful alternative to X. Especially when competitors like X and Threads have treated drafts as table stakes for years.
The feature works exactly as you’d expect: start a new post, tap the Drafts button in the top-right corner, and pick up where you left off. No gimmicks. No overthinking. Just… drafts.
This update lands alongside Bluesky’s recently teased roadmap, which puts a big emphasis on:
- improving its algorithmic Discover feed
- offering better recommendations on who to follow
- making the app feel more real-time
In other words: less “quiet protocol experiment,” more “actual social network.”
And yet, the company is refreshingly honest about where it still falls short. Bluesky admits it’s still catching up on fundamentals, things like private accounts or better support for longer video formats, features many users already consider non-negotiable.
Still, momentum is real. Since opening to the public in early 2024, Bluesky has grown to over 42 million users, based on data pulled directly from its developer API. That’s not niche anymore, that’s a platform with expectations.
Drafts won’t redefine Bluesky. But they do signal something important: the platform is moving from idealism to usability. And sometimes, that’s exactly what growth looks like.
