Apple Launches Digital ID, Letting You Carry Your Passport in Apple Wallet

Apple is one step closer to making the physical wallet obsolete. The company has officially launched Digital ID, a new feature that lets iPhone and Apple Watch users in the United States store a digital copy of their U.S. passport directly in Apple Wallet, and use it at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel.

Initially announced as part of iOS 26, Digital ID builds on Apple’s growing ecosystem of government ID integrations, adding passports to the list of supported documents alongside state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs. The feature is now live in a dozen U.S. states and Puerto Rico, with more expected to follow soon.

To add a passport, users can simply tap the “Add” (+) button in Wallet, select “Driver’s License or ID Cards,” choose Digital ID, and follow a guided setup process. This involves scanning the passport’s photo page and embedded chip using an iPhone, taking a selfie for identity verification, and completing a few facial and head movements to enhance security.

When traveling, presenting a Digital ID works just like Apple Pay. Users double-click the side or Home button, select their ID, and hold the device near an identity reader. After confirming via Face ID or Touch ID, the iPhone or Apple Watch transmits only the specific information requested, giving travelers more transparency and control over their data.

Apple emphasizes that Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and currently can’t be used for international travel or border crossings. The feature remains in beta, as not all TSA checkpoints have the necessary reader infrastructure yet. The TSA website lists participating states and airports, while still recommending travelers carry a physical ID as backup.

With the addition of Digital ID, Apple Wallet now holds almost everything: payment cards, loyalty cards, tickets, passes, and government IDs, making it one step closer to becoming the only thing you need to carry when you leave the house.
