Social commerce: we talk about it all the time but it still feels like a marketer’s dream. Well maybe not for long, as YouTube videos are about to get more “shoppable” thanks to a new ad unit called Shopping ads.

It all started (probably) when YouTube introduced cards for related content and launched TrueView for shopping, which “allowed advertisers to automatically turn their Google merchant data into product cards,” according to TechCrunch.
But shopping ads enhance the “shoppable” functionality to all videos on YouTube as of today. So now, not only can Google advertisers promote their products directly into their videos, viewers can also start the purchase process directly from YouTube.

You might soon start seeing an info icon on the upper right corner of the video you watch. Clicking on the icon will bring up related Cards, some of which may now be product ads that will take you directly to the merchant site.
