Just a little less than a year ago we had written about YouTube‘s plans to release a new, subscription-type content service. It now seems that the social network it’s ready to launch this new feature, as reports suggest.
Only a couple of days before, YouTube send an email to all content creators informing them about the upcoming changes. According to Re/Code, content creators should agree to the new terms and conditions, which, among others, state that “videos will no longer be available for public display or monetization in the United States”.
The subscription scheme has not been released in its full detail yet. Others claim that there will be a $10 monthly charge for users to access premium, ad-free content. In this case, YouTube will generate revenue from both free and paid accounts, through ads and fees, respectively.
This scenario seems plausible, given that there are many content providers out there that follow the freemium model. Many of them (among them the troubled Tidal) are considering consolidating various media formats to offer to their subscribers – from video to music to essays. So it only makes sense if YouTube wants to ride the wave and cut a largest share of the pie.
I guess we’ll have to wait for October 22nd.
