Vero is the latest social media app to take on one of the “big boys,” with many describing it as an “Instagram killer.” Before we believe all the rumours though, let’s take a closer look.
Many social media apps have come and gone. Over the years, many have been mentioned with the “killer” suffix… Facebook killer, Snapchat killer, LinkedIn killer. Despite this, all of the aforementioned are alive and kicking. And now, yet another “killer” has appeared on the scene: Vero, the “Instagram killer.” Sounds scary, right? But is it really? I mean, should it concern Instagram in any way?
I wouldn’t think so.
Apart from the fact that Instagram is the most popular photo and video-sharing platform currently out there with over 800 million monthly active users, its big sister (or brother), Facebook certainly has its back. Also, Instagram, just like Facebook, has demonstrated how it will simply copy what it can’t buy, so… no surprises there. Despite its power though, Instagram has started to anger its users more and more lately. Whether it’s the sudden move away from a chronological feed, or its increase in ads, there’s plenty to get people riled up. And this is where apps like Vero come in.
Vero is a new social media app that lets you post pretty much whatever you want. Whether it’s a photo, a song, a book, or a movie recommendation, a cool restaurant, or a great article. Just share away. That doesn’t actually explain why it’s been named the latest “Instagram killer” though. That has been attributed primarily to the fact that Instagram users are its most relevant demographic. Many have been jumping ship, preferring Vero’s chronological feed, allowing everyone to see… everything. You literally won’t miss a thing, if you just keep on scrolling. Also, there are no ads on Vero.
Vero is different from Instagram in that you don’t have to crop any of your images. You can just upload them in full size. Impressed much? Me, not really. Yet, Vero is based on a more noble idea: fighting against a “false sense of connection” that’s “left us lonelier than ever.” It wants to give the control back to users, who “can behave in a way that is more natural,” which in turn “ends up being better for [users].” I get that… but at what cost?
Well, Vero’s business model is… different. No advertising means charging users to use it. Eventually. The first million get it free for life. But Vero doesn’t even have that many users yet, and it’s been around since 2015. Hardly the fastest-growing or most popular app out there… Yet, there is some activity that may give it some street cred. Several Instagram influencers have downloaded the app and have suggested that their followers do the same. This has certainly lead to a rise in interest around it.
