Netflix has its own hackathon too and this year’s winner invites your to feel the action by vibrating your phone as you watch your favorite series.
Hackathons are often the birthplace of amazing new features later deployed to the public. Recent gems coming from Netflix hack day include a Fitbut hack that shuts off Netflix when you fall asleep or a Netflix app for the original NES, just to name a few.
For this year’s edition, Netflix employees were asked to focus on voice technology and haptics.
Project Rumble Pack worked with haptics to follow an inspiration coming from mobile gaming: making the phone vibrate to allow players to feel the action. The hack brings that experience to Netflix, letting you feel the vibrations when watching a flight or an explosion for example.
Project RUmble Pack was created by Hans van de Bruggen and Ed Barker.
