When the number one photo-sharing app opens a new office, you can be sure it will be totally “grammable.” We are taking you on a tour of Instagram’s colorful new space in New York City, where ice cream is unlimited, and the bar is always open.
Instagram has grown up, and it’s time for the company to move its 290 New York employees to their own space, after sharing offices with Facebook for years. The number one photo-sharing app has taken over the 14th floor of the Lower Manhattan building where Facebook is also located. And as you can imagine, it is very “grammable.” Welcome to Instagram.
In many ways, the new space is similar to others in the tech industry. Food and drinks are unlimited and free for employees and visitors. All these sexy companies have swanky offices, but when you are Instagram, you also need to give extreme care to how your space will look inside the app’s feed. Of course, it still is a working space, so usability had to remain the number one criteria, as explained by Kitty Bromhead, Instagram New York’s culture lead.
You can’t just visit the new offices, however. So let us take you on a virtual tour.
The Digital Greeting Wall
As soon as you step out of the elevator on the 14th floor, a giant digital wall puts you straight into your best Instagram mood. The screens show rotating Stories and feed posts shared by Instagram’s 800 million users. Maybe the next one could be yours!
The Dome is already the most “grammed” space of the new Instagram offices in NY. And why wouldn’t it be? This prismatic space transforms everything into a rainbow, acting like one of Instagram’s best photo filter. The installation is based on “a Dichroic Geometry concept”, a reference to the dichroic (or two-colored) glass NASA and the Department of Defense created in the 1950s!
The Frozen Palm
The Frozen Palm is the ultimate setup for Instagram foodies. The dining area was designed to satisfy even the most demanding Instagrammers with its gold gliding and art deco signage. And of course, it also serves its core purpose: free gelato, juices, and coffee for employees!
The Living Green Wall
Any tech company these days must remind everyone of the importance of nature and the environment. What does that better than a two-floor tall living plant wall? Not much in fact. Plus it looks really good in photos. Of course.
The Thirsty Flamingo
You guessed right. The Thirsty Flamingo is a bar – an open-bar even. And yes, it is free, and open all day long. So we get the Thirsty, but why the Flamingo? Well, Instagram’s original office had a vibrant pink flamingo wallpaper. While this no longer exists in the new office space, it deserves a tribute.
The MiNY Conference Room
You know it, every Instagram office space around the world has one of them. Welcome to the mini-conference room. At just 5.5 by 4.5 feet, it is the smallest meeting space in the office.
