Since WhatsApp was bought by Facebook two years ago it has grown exponentially, and has become the top messaging app on Android, according to a new report from SimilarWeb. WhatsApp even outpaces Facebook’s flagship messaging app, Messenger in both growth and popularity.
The report states that WhatsApp has the biggest amount of users in the 109 out of 187 countries surveyed – 55.6% – and is ahead of Facebook Messenger by a long way. Messenger ranks higher in only 49 of the 187 countries. The only other messaging app to claim 10 or more countries was Viber.

WhatsApp is particularly popular in countries like Brazil, India, Russia, and Mexico, but its appeal of course goes much further on all continents.
In some countries – Japan or South Korea for example – local apps have dominated and WhatsApp hasn’t been able to reign supreme. In Japan, users spend an average of 40 minutes a day on Line, which is the top app. In South Korea, KakaoTalk keeps its place at top of the list of messaging apps. One surprise from the study is the dominance of Blackberry’s BBM in Indonesia, where 87.5% of Android devices have the app installed. In the U.S., only 0.42% of Android devices have the app installed.
