Spotify has been giving podcasts more attention lately, and this can be seen from the amount and variety of shows that are available on the app. To strengthen its podcast game, it’s launching “Spotlight,” a new “multimedia format” that combines podcasts with visual elements.
The new format is called “Spotlight,” and it doesn’t only work with podcasts. It works by combining audiobooks, news, and other audio formats, with visual elements like photos, text, or even videos. Spotify has partnered with a few content creators for the launch of Spotlight.
Spotlight is expected to help Spotify boost its original content offering following the lacklustre performance of some of its previous efforts. The Spotify Singles series may have done well, but that’s about it. Spotlight may also help Spotify compete against other top podcast veterans like Apple.
Content on Spotlight will appear as a playlist, and the visual elements will be available on mobile devices through the Spotify app. It will be available to US users first.
In 2013, Spotify launched another feature with the same name. It too used playlists, but it differed in its use, as it was created to add artist commentary to music.
Spotify’s efforts to update the podcast format are a good thing, but will they help podcasts reach more people, or get more people interested in listening to them? That remains to be seen.
