Last week, SpaceX, the company founded by serial entrepreneur Elon Musk, released a surreal video of a rocket landing on a drone ship. And what better format than 360-degree video to show it all off?
The video of the successful touchdown, only the second of its kind, was published on Facebook and YouTube, with view counts north of 1.5 million and 1.2 million respectively. While the video is not the greatest hit ever, it is definitely an example to follow by marketers who are looking to implement 360-degree videos in their strategies… And have the right equipment… And money.

Here’s what the fuss is all about:
Pretty amazing, right? Looking at the bigger picture though, one can’t help but think: Does this video benefit more SpaceX or Facebook and YouTube? Maybe the latter?
Of course, the footage is a great way to showcase SpaceX’s groundbreaking prowess and judging by the comments, it has wowed many. But the 360-degree format is not an end in itself: it plays out as a stepping stone for a technology that YouTube and Facebook in particular are betting on big time: VR. And with YouTube rolling out 360-degree live-streaming, we may not be far away from watching comparable rocket landings and other space stuff live, and in an even more interactive way. Exciting times!
