This week can pretty much be summed up as an absolute sh*t storm of conflict, racism, financial fright and general political unrest. I am also 100% adverse to mass media, and have pretty much been getting all of my information from independent sources online. I read a study showing that the “standard” media in England was 70% negative on the subjects of immigration, human rights and the European Union. You can read more here.
Right, time for your weekly lighthearted, social media fiesta!
Twitter Brand Wars
Ah Twitter! The favourite online arena for all-out brand wars. No matter what business you’re in, a single tweet is enough to start a battle. And so it was on Tuesday when Chrissy Teigen, wife of crooner John Legend, offered to send one of her fans a blender. The tweet went something like this
Ima send u a blender dm me your address https://t.co/gVE4B2paJa
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) June 28, 2016
Soon after, Vitamix, Blendtec and NutriBullet jumped in, and started championing their brand over the others.
I DM'ed Amina that I would send her a Vitamix and literally 3 seconds later I got a notification saying @Vitamix is now following. SPIES!?

In the end, the model signed off and went to feed her baby…

Taste The Rainbow
Another week, another Instagram trend. Colourful, off-menu drinks available at Starbucks have replaced the rainbow lattes and the cheese toasties. How did we get to this? Well, about a month ago, snaps of a drink called the “pink drink” made with acai tea and coconut milk started popping up across the app, soon followed by purple, blue, green and orange varieties.
According to Adweek, between the 10th of May and 26th of June, users tagged 14,134 Instagram posts with #pinkdrink. Another 1,851 included #purpledrink and 1,670 were tagged with a #greendrink hashtag. #orangedrink and #bluedrink were used 601 times. All five combined generated 17,779 posts.
And if you want to know what’s in each one so you can order them, users @healthnutlife and @cookeatlift lay it all out for you.

Snapchat King Khaled
We all know and love DJ Khaled and his love for Snapchat. Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the musician and all-around Snapchat sensation has said he would like to Snapchat the birth of his son. “Actually, I wanna Snapchat the whole birth”. When Kimmel asked what his fiancée might say about broadcasting the birth, Khaled seemed convinced it wouldn’t be an issue.
The key is that I’m the king and every queen should support the king. I’m a talk to the doctor and if he says everything is going to run smooth, meaning that the queen is right and my son is right, if it’s running smooth … I can just do my thing.
DJ Khaled also added that his future son is “definitely going to have a beard” and that he is pretty much already a “young icon.” You can see the video about it here
Tumblr Gets Political
As we’re still recovering and debating the Brexit vote here in the UK, over in the US, election season and recent tragic events like the Orlando shooting have been causing heated discussions around the country and on social media about issues like gun violence and LGBT equality.
This week, Tumblr launched a new social impact campaign meant to start conversations around these issues, and encourage Millennials to go out and vote.
This year, the stakes of the election feel really high, and there’s a lot happening in the conversation that’s confusing and could be misleading for young voters,
said Victoria McCullough, Tumblr’s social impact and public policy manager.
Starting this week, Tumblr, in partnership with MTV’s Elect This initiative, is hosting a series of Q&As called IssueTime, a spin-off of Tumblr’s AnswerTime Q&As. Each IssueTime brings together a panel of experts to answer users’ questions about different issues, including gun violence, immigration, women’s empowerment, mental health, LGBT equality, climate change and national security.

The goals of the campaign are to drive more users to Tumblr and get more young people to vote, McCullough said.
We’re trying to get people to realize what the issues are for this particular election—get them excited, fired up—and then show them where and how to register to vote. There’s a real concern that millennials aren’t going to show up to vote this year, and we want to push back on the narrative.
Well, I certainly hope they go out and vote to secure that majority much better than we did for #Brexit. I’m off to sing in the rain.
