Facebook is expanding its test of a breaking news tag in more countries, including, Australia, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the UK.
Facebook kicked off its test of a breaking news tag back in March 2018 with around 50 publishers, most of them in the US and Canada. This week, the test is expanding to more publishers and in new countries across Europe, Latin America and Australia.
The announcement came from Joey Rhyu, product manager, in a blog post:
“In addition, the breaking news label—which had already been fully rolled out in the U.S. and Canada—will now be seen by everyone in Australia, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the U.K.”
The test will also be carried across Facebook’s CrowdTangle content discovery platform, helping more people discover more real-time content.
According to data collected by Facebook, breaking news posts about politics, crime, disaster and business perform best. Perhaps even more of a positive result, Facebook has found that the extra visual indication has helped people feeling “more informed” on the platform and identify what really matters versus the potential spread of fake news.
