Nowadays, a week doesn’t go by without Facebook testing a new feature. This time it’s payments – peer-to-peer payments to be exact.
Peer-to-peer payments have been tested by Facebook in the past, but this time, the company is making them more accessible within the navigation tab of its flagship app. The new shortcut is called “Send or Request money” and as it clearly states, it allows you to send or request money to and from your friends.
However, payments will not be managed within the app itself. Once tapped, the new feature will move you into Messenger in order to arrange the payment.

Peer-to-peer payments through Facebook Messenger is only supported in the US at the moment so you will only see the new “Send or Request Money” navigation link if you’re using the US version of the Facebook app.

There is no saying why Facebook is moving into managing payments or where the company intends to take this feature. However, not so long ago, Facebook has explained that payments was never going to be a business in itself for the company (i.e. they will not monetise the feature), but rather a service they will provide to businesses that promote their products and services on the platform.
