Facebook has become one of the leading platforms where people go to get informed and follow the news. Alongside with Twitter, it has changed the way news are being brought to readers and consumed.
And it looks like this could be just the beginning. Reports are telling us that Facebook could be working on a standalone breaking news app.

According to a report by Business Insider, Facebook is already testing a new app that lets publishers share breaking news with followers. The updates will be short, 100 characters maximum, and include a URL to the publisher’s own website. Note that publishers will only be able to share URLs from their own websites, no third-party links.

For users, this will mean downloading a new app and subscribing to publishers, or topics, they wish to receive notifications from. The link that will be included in the update, will take users directly to the publisher’s website, skipping any interaction with Facebook. There is not much information at this stage, but we imagine Facebook would also make use of its latest Instant Article feature for publishers.
The app is reportedly being tested in alpha mode and Facebook has not yet released any official information.
