Animated GIFs are everywhere nowadays – and while they are already very eye-catching, some creators are taking them a step further by creating amazing 3D effects.
When GIFs first appeared on our social media feeds, their slight animation and looping effect was enough to capture our attention amongst a plethora of static images. But today, as more and more GIFs are being shared across all social media channels, they have lost some of their “eye-catchiness.” So, creators have started taking it one step further – by creating amazing 3D effects.
It’s not about technology – it’s about design, and a surprising visual effect. In fact, all it takes are two solid-coloured vertical lines. These lines (typically white) create a visual effect of depth within the flat image. When the animated characters move into the foreground – i.e. in front of the vertical lines – they seem to extend beyond the flat image, and create the impression of a 3D animation – Thank you, brain!
Below are a few examples of particularly well-built 3D GIFs. Have you come across one that you really liked? Share it in the comments.
