ChatGPT’s “Adult Mode” To Allow Erotic Text, Not Explicit Content

OpenAI is getting closer to introducing a more permissive version of its LLM with ChatGPT Adult, one that allows adult users to engage in erotic conversations. But before expectations run wild, the company is drawing a very clear line: this will be about text-based flirtation and suggestive exchanges, not explicit pornographic content.

According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is exploring what it internally describes as “smut, not pornography.” In practice, that means users may be able to generate racier text interactions, while explicit images, videos, and voice content remain strictly off-limits.

A delayed rollout shaped by safety concerns

The feature was initially expected to launch earlier this year, but has since been delayed. The reason? A mix of technical challenges and ethical concerns, particularly around age verification.

OpenAI’s current age-detection system reportedly misclassified around 12% of underage users as adults. That margin of error is significant enough to raise red flags internally, especially when dealing with sensitive content.

Until the company can confidently prevent minors from accessing adult interactions, the rollout remains on hold.

This isn’t a new challenge for OpenAI. The company has been grappling with content moderation boundaries since its early days.

Back in 2021, issues surfaced with AI Dungeon, a text-based game powered by OpenAI’s models, where the AI would sometimes escalate harmless prompts into violent or inappropriate sexual scenarios. These incidents highlighted a core difficulty: AI struggles to consistently distinguish between acceptable adult content and harmful material, especially when context shifts quickly.

The upcoming approach attempts to address that by limiting adult interactions to text only, while maintaining strict safeguards against anything involving non-consensual scenarios, exploitation, or minors.

Why OpenAI is exploring this now

The move also reflects growing competitive pressure. As rivals like xAI and Anthropic continue to evolve, OpenAI is looking for ways to expand user engagement and unlock new revenue streams. Adult content, handled carefully, has historically proven to be a strong driver of both.

Even CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged the tension. While he’s suggested that erotica could boost growth, he’s also expressed hesitation about whether it aligns with OpenAI’s broader mission of building technology that genuinely benefits users.

To navigate this space, OpenAI is reportedly investing in additional safeguards, including:

  • Dedicated mental health and well-being teams
  • Systems designed to prevent users from forming unhealthy emotional dependencies on AI
  • Ongoing monitoring of long-term behavioral impact

The company is also prioritizing other updates, like personality customization and deeper personalization, before rolling out adult mode.
