While you were busy celebrating the 4th of July, Timehop got hacked. Names, email addresses and “some” phone numbers of 21 million Timehop users were breached.
You may remember Timehop – the application that would resurface your social media memories from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Swarm (remember that one?) on your mobile device. It was even before Facebook launched On This Day. Well, whether you are an active user, or have never completely deleted your old account, read on, because you will need to take action.
Timehop was the victim of a “network intrusion” on July 4. Names, email addresses, and “some” phone numbers were breached for 21 million users. However, your account was not accessed. That means your private and direct messages, financial data, social media content, photos and Timehop data was not shared with any third party.
Timehop was quick to react to the breach and rapidly deactivated the keys that allow the app to access the social media accounts connected by its users. This means that if you wish to continue using Timehop, you will have to reauthorize access to your social media accounts.
If you used your phone number to log into your Timehop account, read on, as this might be the main concern.
Timehop strongly suggests that you contact your cellular provider immediately to ensure that your number cannot be ported. Your provider will ask you to set up a PIN for your wireless account.
Timehop is conducting a “thorough audit” of all accounts, credentials, and permissions, granted to all authorized users, and enhanced security protocols are being deployed. The company has hired a “well-established and experienced cybersecurity incident response firm” to lead its response to the event, determine exposure or potential exposure of user data, ensure that no further attacks are ongoing, and to create a recovery architecture.
The main question is: will you keep your account?
