In a weird case of life imitates art, a Subreddit dedicated to Infinity War’s supervillain Thanos is planning to cull half its members at random.
Reddit is the meeting place of many weird and wonderful geeks, and one of its Subreddits has grown to over 300,000 members in around three months. The Subreddit in question r/ThanosDidNothingWrong is one that glorifies the nefarious intentions (and actions) of everyone’s favourite supervillain from the latest instalment of the Avengers – Infinity War.
If you haven’t seen the movie, you are more likely to have come across memes or other pop culture references to Thanos somewhere across the Internet, which explains what he’s all about. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, spoiler warning ahead.
SPOILER ALERT!
So, here it is: Thanos gets hold of all the Infinity Stones and uses the Infinity Gauntlet to pulverise half the universe. And because of that, you either love him or hate him. 300,000 Redditors in the r/ThanosDidNothingWrong Subreddit obviously approve of his actions, and over time many have called for a random ban of hundreds of thousands of Redditors from it. In the name of perfect balance of course.
The admins have discussed their plans with Reddit itself and have delayed the action from July 4 for obvious reasons, and have planned it for July 9 instead. Redditor The Jedi Apprentice will do the honours with a bot created by the admins of the Subreddit. The ban will make Internet history as the largest mass-ban ever… Actually, don’t believe that. I made it up. But yeah, it’s going to be huge!
