YouTube users on Android have been able to watch 360 degree videos on the app for a while now, with their Google Cardboard. On the other hand, iOS users have been waiting for their turn at the immersive experience. In a surprise move, just a few days ahead of the company’s I/O developer conference, Google has given the iOS version of YouTube a little upgrade, allowing Google Cardboard owners to view 360 degree videos as well.

For over a year now, Google’s dominance in video has started to slip, with Facebook aggressively and swiftly penetrating the market. But it’s not just about plain video anymore. It’s about 360 video and VR, and live-streaming as well. But, whereas Facebook doesn’t necessarily give preferential treatment to one mobile platform over another, Google has historically kept iOS’s ecosystem of devices out in the cold.

The move to now give iOS users access to it’s Google Cardboard content is a step in the right direction to start competing seriously with Facebook.

Apps on iOS devices that can play 360 content, have been updated, and users can find a Google Cardboard icon on videos that are compatible with Cardboard. They can then tap the icon to view the video in 360 as long as they also have one of the ‘Works with Google Cardboard’ devices. This move comes just days before Google I/O which is tipped to be “VR-heavy”, and which many say will include the announcement of a high end VR device like Oculus.
