The New Facebook Like Button Promises 6% More Engagements

Sometimes, it’s the little things that trigger the biggest changes. Facebook has updated its social plugin button, especially the famous “like” button –  and promises the new button can generate up to 6% more engagements than its predecessor.

In an official blog post, Facebook explains how the familiar ‘f’ has now been replaced by the more widely recognisable “thumbs up” in the social plugin Like button. The counter of “Likes” has been integrated within the button itself and a triggered button’s colour will be modified to a slightly more vibrant shade of blue.

Facebook explains that the main reason for the change was to have a more mobile-friendly design and be able to better integrate it within Instant Articles.

And the best news came from a set of A/B testing Facebook has been conducting on selected sites and Instant articles: the analysis found that the new button was actually triggering 6% more engagements (likes) than the legacy one. While the new Like button is the most noteworthy change, Facebook has also reviewed the share, follow and Save to Facebook buttons to follow the new design guidelines. In this case, the redesign is very slight, with both Share and Follow buttons keeping the “f” logo within their design.
