Every year, McDonald’s distributes millions of coupons through traditional marketing: newspapers, leaflets, direct mail, etc. To amplify its direct marketing campaigns, McDonald’s also invests in web display campaigns to build awareness and push people to redeem the coupons in one of their restaurants.

The interactive banners were built to generate awareness around the campaign. As such they are rather traditional, except that the last frame includes a fully functional barcode. Users are invited to take a screenshot of the barcode on their mobile, and go redeem the coupon in the nearest restaurant.

Combining the power of direct marketing with new technology, could also allow McDonald’s to add geofencing, and reactive marketing to its coupon campaigns in the future. Imagine how the banner could just appear on your device when browsing within range of a restaurant for example.
