After Facebook acquired WhatsApp, many wondered what could happen to the existing Facebook Messenger. Well although Messenger still has to prove itself useful, Facebook updated its app on Thursday with a major new feature – users can now make free voice calls to their Facebook friends.

The new feature is very similar to the way other apps like Viber or WeChat operate. Users can make phone calls to friends for free, provided they have at least a wifi connection.

With the update, you will now see a small phone icon next to your contacts’ names in Facebook Messenger. Simply tap this icon to make a voice call. Of course calls can only be made when both users have access to wifi or a data connection.

Do you think Facebook Messenger could become your number 1 platform for messages and voice calls?
